Spain’s Interior Minister Angel Acebes announced on Saturday that six Spaniards and three Mexicans suspected of collaborating with the Basque separatist group ETA have been arrested in Mexico, in an operation carried out jointly by Mexican and Spanish police. Mr. Acebes said another person had been detained in the Basque region of northern Spain. Most of those detained had fled from Europe after being involved in ETA’s decades-long bombing and assassination campaign. Mr. Acebes said that several of those arrested had been channelling funds to and from ETA and had also helped exiled members of the group to hide their identity. He also revealed that accounts worth 900,000 Mexican pesos (about £60,000) had been frozen as part of the year-long investigation. ETA is accused of killing more than 800 people in its long campaign for an independent Basque homeland, and has been blacklisted by both the European Union and the United States as a terrorist organisation.
