LAST BIRTHDAY AS A BATCHELOR

On Friday, January 30, Prince Felipe spent his last birthday as a bachelor with his fiancée Doña Letizia Ortiz visiting the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Covadonga in Asturias where the he received the title of Prince of Asturias in 1977 and where his bride-to-be was baptised. They had intended to visit the sanctuary as quietly as possible but when the news got out, the Mayor of Cangas de Onis, where the church is located, turned up accompanied by several journalists, some 200 townspeople and a children's choir who sang 'Happy Birthday' to the Prince. Afterwards they went to the Cave of the Santina (the Virgin) where the Archbishop of Oviedo said prayers. After the ceremony, the journalists gave the prince some birthday presents, including a two cookbooks of typical Asturian recipes. The couple then went to have lunch with the President of Asturias at a restaurant in Cangas de Onis. At the end of the day, the Prince said it was the best birthday he'd ever had. The couple stretched out their visit until Saturday to visit Doña Letizia's grandparents and have lunch with them. They returned to Madrid on Saturday night.
