Terrorists struck in the Moroccan city of Casablanca on Friday night, with five suicide attacks which killed 41 people and injured more than 100 others. The bombs targeted foreign interests including a Spanish social club and restaurant, the Hotel Safir, the Jewish cemetery and the Circle of the Alliance, and an Italian restaurant located near the Belgian embassy. Ten suicide bombers were among the dead, as were two Spanish nationals, a French man, an Italian, while the rest of the victims are believed to be Moroccan although it has not been possible to identify 17 of the bodies as their injuries left them unrecognisable. The nationality of the terrorists is not yet known although the authorities suspect that the al-Qaeda network could be responsible. In recent months Morocco has received direct threats purporting to come from Osama bin Laden, and after Friday’s tragic attacks the country has now joined the U.S.A., Israel, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia on the list of countries which are the targets of international terrorism. The Moroccan authorities called for calm among the local population and tourists, and on Sunday they were reportedly questioning over 30 suspects in relation with the attacks.
