A court in South Africa has sentenced a security guard to life imprisonment for murdering the ex-wife of former President F.W. de Klerk. 64 year old Marike de Klerk, who was divorced from the ex-leader, was found dead at her seafront apartment in Cape Town in December 2001. She had been stabbed and strangled. Her killer was working at the block of apartments at the time, and is believed to have broken into the property to rob it. The judge said the accused showed “absolutely no remorse whatsoever” during his trial, and that “communities out there are looking to the court for protection against crimes of violence”.
