Fortunately for Spain, Russia turned out not to be so strong as in the past. Even so everyone was on tenterhooks until Valerón put the ball in the net 14 minutes into the second half. The win is being seen as a good omen for the national team. Spain hasn't won an opening game in an international cup contest since 1988. See page 30 for a full report on the game.
