Fortunately for Spain, Russia turned out not to be so strong as in the past. Even so everyone was on tenterhooks until ValerĂ³n put the ball in the net 14 minutes into the second half. The win is being seen as a good omen for the national team. Spain hasn't won an opening game in an international cup contest since 1988. See page 30 for a full report on the game.
