70 HURT AS YOUTH RAMPAGE IN MADRID

Edition: 525

At least 70 people were hurt when police clashed with hundreds of rampaging youths in Madrid's main nightlife district of Malasana on two consecutive nights early last week. The first two days of May are holidays in Madrid, and it is a tradition for youngsters to celebrate in the streets. But when riot police tried to prevent their outdoor drinking parties, youths set fire to bins, knocked down telephone booths and threw bricks and bottles at them. Violence began in the Malasana district on Tuesday when youths in their early 20s tried to gather for a party in the Plaza Dos de Mayo. At least 1,000 youths took part in rioting overnight on Tuesday. Fifteen officers were injured, with one suffering a broken arm. The Spanish press described the Malasana area as "a war zone".
