Hundreds of boats in the Balearic Islands sank or suffered damage last week when an earthquake hit Algeria. Emergency services were overwhelmed with calls from people who were frightened when they felt the earth tremors, and there were 34 aftershocks measuring up to three on the Richter scale over a period of several hours, causing huge waves to rise up. Yachts in the ports of Puerto de Maó, Invernada and Cala Llonga in Menorca were particularly badly affected, as were those in the northern part of Mallorca, although in Ibiza, where the marine movements were spectacular, there was very little damage.
