CROSSING THE ROAD HAZARDS

Edition: 322
Date: 12-05-03

A recent report indicates that many drivers and pedestrians fail to comply with regulations at pedestrian crossings. According to the report, which was carried out by a supermarket consumer magazine, 40% of drivers don’t stop at a pedestrian crossing if a pedestrian is waiting to cross, 27% take no notice of Stop signs, and 9% fail to stop at a red traffic light. Drivers can’t take all the blame, however – the same report says that 20% of pedestrians cross the road before the ‘green man’ indicates that it is safe to do so, 10% cross over without looking to see if a vehicle is approaching, and about 22% cross the road in unsuitable places. The report was issued after carrying out a survey in 13 towns over a four-day period in April. Observers waited by traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, and junctions with a Stop sign, and analysed the conduct of 33,000 pedestrians and 43,000 vehicles.
